Leon and Adelaide Tong together on Waiheke Island

If you know Leon and Adelaide Tong, chances are you’ll know them from around the island, through their fishing charter business, On the Hunt Charters, or simply as two familiar faces who have made Waiheke their home.

Now, they’re embarking on a new adventure together. And while the waters may be a little different, the things that matter most haven’t changed. Knowing your territory. Understanding the conditions. Building relationships. Working hard. And knowing that a successful outcome is rarely a matter of luck.

For Leon and Adelaide, the next adventure is real estate.

Two different journeys.
One island they call home.

Leon is a third-generation Waiheke Islander. Born and raised here, his connection with the island runs considerably deeper than its coastline.

His family has been part of the local community for generations, with his parents operating businesses in Oneroa for many years. After attending King’s College and the University of Otago, Leon spent approximately eight years working in Waiheke’s building industry before heading to Australia, where he worked in the building and mining sectors. It was there that he met Adelaide.

Born in France and raised in Western Australia, Adelaide established a career in the mining industry, with more than a decade of experience in contract administration and project-related roles.

Their lives eventually brought them back to Waiheke, where they bought a home, started a family and established On the Hunt Charters, with Leon at the helm and Adelaide managing the administration and financial side of the business.

Today, they’re raising their two children on the island, surrounded by the community that Leon grew up in and that Adelaide has wholeheartedly embraced.

Different strengths.
Shared values.

There’s a reason Leon and Adelaide work so well together.

Leon: local knowledge, practical experience.

Leon is naturally personable, practical and hands-on. His years in the building industry have given him an appreciation of property that extends well beyond what meets the eye, while his lifelong connection with Waiheke provides an understanding of the island that simply cannot be learned overnight.

Adelaide: detail, organisation and community.

Adelaide brings an equally valuable but different set of strengths. Alongside helping manage the day-to-day operations of their charter business, Adelaide has worked for more than five years as a Project Coordinator with GWE Consulting, working closely with engineers, planners and architects on projects involving geotechnical, wastewater and stormwater services.

Through this role, she has developed strong client relationships and a disciplined, organised and detail-focused approach, together with valuable practical exposure to the technical considerations involved in Waiheke property.

She has also served as a qualified volunteer firefighter on the island for nearly three years, reflecting her commitment to the community she has called home for more than a decade.

Together, they bring complementary skills, a shared work ethic and an understanding that relationships are built on trust, not promises.

They may be new to real estate, but they are certainly not new to Waiheke.

A warm welcome

A new chapter with Ray White Waiheke.

Matthew Smith, Business Owner, and Denise Whitfield, Branch Manager, are delighted to welcome Leon and Adelaide to the Ray White Waiheke team.

“One of the things I’ve always valued about Waiheke is the depth of connection people have with this island, particularly those who have grown up here, built businesses here and chosen to raise their families here.

Leon and Adelaide represent exactly that.

Leon brings a lifetime of local knowledge, along with a practical understanding of property through his years in the building industry. Adelaide brings extensive experience in contract administration and project coordination, together with valuable exposure to the technical aspects of island property and a genuine commitment to the community.

What particularly appeals to Denise and me is that they’re not simply entering real estate as two individuals. They’re bringing an established partnership, with complementary strengths and a history of working successfully together.

We believe they’ll make a wonderful addition to our team, and we’re looking forward to supporting them as they build the next chapter of their careers.”

For Leon and Adelaide, this next chapter is about more than a career change. It’s an opportunity to work together, build on the relationships they’ve established over the years and help others navigate one of life’s most important decisions.

Whether you’re buying your first home, selling a much-loved family property, moving to the island or preparing for your next adventure, Leon and Adelaide would love to be part of your journey.

And while Leon might still be found out on the Gulf from time to time, there’s now something else this husband-and-wife team is on the hunt for. The very best outcome for you and your property.
